Sweethaven Gallery is very proud to feature the photographs of photographer Joan Kocak in a new exhibit, “TREESCAPES” which runs from October 24th through November 22nd, 2015. The public is invited to see the work at 25L Inn Street in Newburyport during regular gallery hours: Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A former graphic designer turned photographer, Joan Kocak’s fine art prints are exhibited in galleries in New England, as well as the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO, and have been published in numerous photography magazines. Enchanted with all forms of photography; analog, digital, alternative process, toy cameras, Polaroid and her dad’s old Ikoflex she enjoys experimenting with them all.
A native of the Northeast, her images are infused with a deep connection to the land and water of the area. “The locations where this series ‘TREESCAPES’ were shot have great significance for me, and remind me of specific people in my life, both here and gone. These images are meant to convey a sense of aloneness and quiet reverie. They were shot in beloved forests and woodlands and attempt to capture the stark simplicity of trees, their grace and wisdom. Trees seem to harbor the great secrets of life; they offer a soothing knowingness just walking amongst them. I’m particularly fond of shooting in fog, and many of these images were shrouded in it.”
In this series, a process of subtly combining layers of photographs of previously shot textures (such as dirty snow, peeling paint and cracked pavement) was used to add a painterly feeling to the original photograph. They are printed on Hahnemuhle German Etching papers, a heavy archival paper that has somewhat of a traditional watercolor paper look. Each work is a signed and numbered limited edition of 50.
