It has been more than eight years since I first set foot in Maine, just before a magical Christmas. Harpswell, where I made "Golden Touch" was one of the first places where I started to know Maine: fresh cold water, salty smells and the light reflecting on the water touched me and brought back childhood memories. This place still is one of my spots for contemplation. I love escaping to the rocky shore, watching the sunset while listening to the sounds of waves as the day goes into night, into dreams.

Some images are essentially representative photography of the world around her that nevertheless dissolve into the wonder of abstract patterns, while others are complex manipulations of the ordinary visual world that use intentional camera movement, multiple exposures, and well planned color palettes to reflect her vision, dreams and feelings.

Merrill’s work has been part of group shows and festivals nationally and internationally, including NYC Center of Photography (USA) and Blank Wall Gallery, (Greece). YourDailyPhotograph.com just announced the selection of Brunswick, Maine artist Olga Merrill to the “YourDailyPhotograph.com Hot 100 of 2021” list for her photographic work, including her image "One and Many", which is part of her show, MYSTIC VISION. Merrill beat 4,500 artists from around the world to take home the prestigious honor.

“One Blood" was taken in Jamaica while on a stock shoot. Every city and town I went to had open markets that had displays like this, but only one had hats and belts displayed like this, and for me, that was the shot! Luckily, I had a board of tourism driver who took me anywhere I wanted to go plus places he said I just had to see. And because lunch was always on me, he took me to the best local places to eat where I rarely saw any tourists. It was a great week, and I can remember almost every minute of it.

“Cayman Clouds" was taken on Cayman Brac the first night we arrived. When we got to our condo, we saw a long boardwalk going out over the water to a gazebo like structure that gave us a great view of the coastline. As the sun was setting, the clouds formed and the suns rays illuminated their edges. It happened very fast and was gone in minutes. So what’s the moral of the story? Keep your camera handy, or you will miss that shot! I’m really glad now that I made the decision to put the camera on my shoulder.

"Concho Belt" was taken at the El Rancho de las Golandrinos, The Ranch of the Swallows, on the Santa Fe Trail. I was attending the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and the assignment was basically to tell the story of Santa Fe. We saw the cowboys and knew we needed to focus on them. Turns out, the cowboys were all Italian cowboys, not a one from the US. So much for telling the story of Santa Fe! In the end, it didn’t matter. We got some great images, had a wonderful time photographing them and made some new friends, including a few horses dripping in silver. The cowboys put on a great show demonstrating their amazing riding and roping skills and the crowds of tourists, and us, went wild.

"As I sat on the grassy, still damp banks of a river I had only just met, I was reminded of something my husband used to say. “Let it wash over you.” Every time we came upon something we couldn’t understand in the way a cultural disconnect in our travels, he would say these words. He loved to travel and so do I. Not a vacation type travel but a “let’s pretend we live here” type of travel. Cultural immersion. "I had a visceral need to make something with my hands. Touch has been an important aspect of forest bathing and I wanted to bring it home, as it were. Spending extended time behind the screen and having touch censored for so long contributed to the need. The act of constructing, deconstructing, and constructing further connected me to the natural cycles of growth and decay. It pulled me in and grounded me. – “Intimate Conversations” from the Intimate Conversations Series

"When I am creating a concept for a series I pick up bread crumbs, as it were. It starts with a general concept, then a specific aspect of the general theme is chosen, which then develops into something similar to a short thesis. With this particular series it has been a slow awakening as there is little written or talked about on the subject. I was listening to the podcast Experts and Masters from @asmpnational enjoying an inspiring interview with @erikalarsen888. Erika stated that her extended time spent in the woods helped hone her senses, specifically her sense of hearing and listening. She felt that it absolutely aided her communication with others and helped her be a better listener. I must go back and listen to the podcast again, there were so many good points. Her words connected with the theory I have been researching that time spent in nature helps us navigate interpersonal relationships. This specific point made perfect sense! Learning to listen in a calm relaxed state is a skill that is very much worth working at, I believe. And so valuable." – Karen Olson

— The Forest
.
"I’ve always been one that appreciates nature and I’ve spent a ton of time in the garden and at the shore. But I hadn’t been in the forest alone since I was a child. In 2020 I began an independent study of neuropsychology, specifically with regard to grief and anxiety. In doing so, I came across the concepts of biophilia and Japanese forest bathing. One must enter the forest or park alone in order to give complete attention to one’s surroundings and engage all the senses. It was scary at first but soon fear gave way to delight. I began to crave being alone in the forest. I was keenly aware of what was happening. As I stood in the midst of the trees I could image all the systems I was reading about, how the trees communicate with each other and with us by means of hormones, fragrances, and electrical connections. It was having a profound effect on my psyche. I would walk softly and gently, seeking out those times when the atmosphere was charged with moisture and light. Forest bathing is now an integral part of my life and my artistic practice."
