BIOGRAPHY
Cindia Sanford developed her love of nature as a child in the forests and fields of Lancaster, Massachusetts, and later, in the marshes, rivers, and beaches of Scituate. At the age of seven she began learning oil painting from her mother, who was an art teacher and exhibiting painter.
In 1976, after receiving a BFA in painting and printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design, Cindia began exhibiting her landscapes of New England marshes, woods, gardens, and meadows.
She has also studied with William Flynn at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and attended intensive summer workshops in painting with Wolf Kahn, John McNamara, and Richard Sheehan at Bennington College.
Cindia’s paintings have been widely exhibited, including galleries on Cape Cod and the Islands, Newbury Street in Boston, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, the Berkshires, and Carmel, California.
She lives in Merrimac, Massachusetts, where she continues to be inspired by Plum Island and the Great Marsh, and to enjoy tending the perennial gardens she began planting in 1986.
ARTIST STATEMENT
As a child I spent many precious hours with my grandfather, exploring the forests and fields surrounding his home in Lancaster, Massachusetts. I learned to move quietly among trees, to listen, to feel, to see.
The perfume of sweet fern, the haunting song of a wood thrush, the bitter / minty taste of a wintergreen leaf found on the forest floor. An ancient uprooted tree with gnarled roots pointing to sky. Much is sensed, yet unseen. A ripple just below the surface, a rustling in the shadows. Something undefinable passing through. My emotional and spiritual connections with the land are founded in these memories.
